Staying Happy After the Holidays

01.01.2019

It is very normal, after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, as well as all of the time that you spend with family and friends, to feel a little let down after Christmas. Feeling a lack of excitement in your life can make you feel sad and leave you feeling down. Rather than wallowing in these feelings, there are a few things that you can do to help boost your mood and prevent yourself from dealing with seasonal depression.

Plan for the Future

If you really love the decorations that are put up around Christmas and are feeling sad when they come down, then one way to help boost your spirits is by replacing these decorations that will help you fall in love with your home and prevent you from being sad that the Christmas season is over. Plants are a great addition to any home and will help to brighten up your space, as will a new piece of art or even pictures of your family and friends from Christmas. In addition to changing up your space, now is the time to get excited about the next upcoming holiday, and if you have decorations that can be used, to get them out and start decorating your home for the future.

Try Out a New Hobby

Sometimes, just getting out of the house or trying something new is a great way to help boost your mood after the excitement of the holiday season. If you don't already have a regular exercise routine, then now is a great time to establish one, as you will experience the joy that endorphins can provide you. Taking an art class, meeting friends at the gym, or finally learning how to dance will all help you improve your mood and feel better. Finally, if those don't work, then try volunteering, as giving back is a great way to improve your happiness.

Stay Thankful

Taking time to reflect on Christmas, the time you got to spend with your family and friends, and the fun that you had will help you feel much better about the season being over. Take some time to look at pictures from the festivities that you enjoyed, get around to writing the thank you notes you have been meaning to, and enjoy using or playing with the gifts that you got. Being thankful will remind you of all the great times that you had over the holidays and can help to prevent you from being sad that they are over.

It is normal to miss the excitement, companionship, and joy that you feel during the holidays, but you don't have to allow feeling sorry that the holidays are over to run or ruin your life. Take control of how you feel by looking to the future, remembering the fun that you had, and even trying something new. No matter if you reminisce by yourself or with others or try to get involved with a solo activity or a group one, you can find happiness after Christmas is over, even if it takes a little effort.
