Christmas in July

14.07.2018

If this is the first time you’ve come across the idea of Christmas in July, you’re in for a treat! After all, what better time of year to think about all-things festive than halfway between one Christmas and the next?

Whether you’re counting down to Christmas 2018 or simply looking for a little relief from the relentless heat, Christmas in July ticks all the right boxes. The key question being – what exactly is Christmas in July? Or perhaps more importantly, where did this curious Christmas in the middle of summer come from in the first place?

Christmas in Summer Time

An unofficial holiday, Christmas in July brings all the fun and festivities of the festive season to the middle of the summer. Depending on where you live in the world, it could be a concept you’ve never heard of, or even something of an annual tradition to enjoy every bit as much as the ‘real’ thing.

In some places, July brings about the exact same traditions you associate with December. Shoppers frantically hitting the High Street for the perfect gifts, huge dinners being cooked for family and friends, shops being kitted out with all the usual decorations and so on. The only difference in this instance being that rather than snowmen and holly, it’s more a case of sunglasses and sunscreen!

For anyone who likes Christmas even a little bit, the idea of a second Christmas in July holds enormous appeal. But in terms of where the whole idea came from, it’s still something of a mystery.

The Origins of Christmas in July

The exact origins of this curious summertime condition are both unclear and disputed. Nevertheless, the vast majority of those who celebrate Christmas in July believe the whole thing got started in Europe. Some say groups of people who missed the festive season so much simply decided to begin giving gifts and celebrating something of a second Christmas to bridge the gaps. Others suggest it all comes down to cravings for cooler weather during the warmest months of the year.

But what’s most interesting today is how Christmas in July seems to be a much bigger deal outside Europe and the United Kingdom. It’s rare to see homes and businesses in Great Britain decorated for Christmas in the middle of July, but head overseas to the United States or Australia and it’s a different story entirely. Nevertheless, if you’re already counting the days to Christmas 2018, why not enjoy a taste of the festive season right now?
